Arvind Sawant, a member of the Shiv Sena (UT) party, stated on Monday that NCP leader Sharad Pawar should think twice before attending a ceremony to present Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the Lokmanya Tilak National Award.
On August 1, Mr. Pawar is set to be the principal guest at an event hosted by the Lokmanya Tilak Smarak Mandir Trust in Pune, where he will share the stage with Prime Minister Modi.
Leaders of several parties in the opposition coalition in INDIA have brought up the matter, claiming it will reflect poorly on the partnership. Ajit Pawar, Mr. Pawar's nephew, rebelled against him and joined the BJP-Shiv Sena administration in Maharashtra, prompting several figures to doubt Mr. Pawar's choice to attend the ceremony.
Mr. Sawant said that Tilak was the author of the expression "Swaraj is my birthright." However, "Is Swaraj here today? He said that Mr. Pawar should reconsider his decision and acknowledge that the current situation is "swa- rajya," which is the rule of one person.
