What does National Moon Day stand for?
International Moon Day is marked every year on July 20 to mark the anniversary of the first time humans stepped foot on the Moon as part of NASA's Apollo 11 mission. Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin conducted their first lunar landing in a location they eventually named Tranquility Base on July 20, 1969.
It was declared an international holiday by the UN General Assembly in its resolution 76/76 on "International cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space" in 2021.
The UN said in a statement that "as ambitious plans for Moon exploration continue to take shape, this global celebration will serve not only as a testament to past achievements but also as a yearly reminder to endeavors in the future."
What happened on Apollo 11
The primary goal of Apollo 11 was to transport astronauts to the Moon and bring them back to Earth in order to carry out the promise made by US President John F. Kennedy in 1961. Even though it was a pretty simple objective, it was nearly impossible to accomplish.
It's impressive that NASA was able to accomplish Kennedy's goal in less than eight years. On July 16, 1969, the Apollo 11 mission carried Buzz Aldrin, Michael Collins, and Neil Armstrong and was launched from Cape Canaveral (then known as Cape Kennedy). Two days later, Neil Armstrong famously said, "One small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind."
Armstrong and Aldrin spent roughly 21 hours on the lunar surface after their Eagle module-assisted landing, gathering around 21.5 kg of lunar material to return to Earth. Pilot Michael Collins was operating the Columbia Command Module when it was orbiting the moon at that time. At the conclusion of their mission to the Moon, Armstrong and Aldrin launched back to Columbia.
