Ex-Pakistan Board Chief Criticizes Pakistan Minister's World Cup ODI Stance as "Not The Way"
The previous head of the PCB emphasized that now was not the time to draw comparisons between Pakistan's participation in the 2023 ODI World Cup and the current Asia Cup.
The government's choice to establish a high-level committee to decide on the participation of the national cricket team in the 2023 ODI World Cup in India has drawn criticism from the former head of the Pakistan Cricket Board, Khalid Mahmood. Mahmood, who oversaw Pakistan's 1999 full tour to India and who had went there in 1989 as the manager of the junior team, claimed that the creation of this committee was absurd. In an interview, Mahmood noted that it was "interesting" that the committee lacked a representation from the primary stakeholder, the Pakistan Cricket Board.
He advised against making any connections between Pakistan's World Cup participation and the Asia Cup that country is hosting at this moment.
"While I agree that India has no excuse not to tour Pakistan right now, this is not how things are done on a global scale." According to Mahmood, the government had directly violated its own policy against combining politics and sports by convening this committee of ministers.
"It makes sense if you say that we are considering the security situation before deciding to send a team to India for the World Cup, but saying out loud that if India doesn't visit Pakistan, we won't send a team to India for the World Cup is combining the two, which we have never done." Mahmood also questioned the necessity of the government's extensive engagement in PCB matters and the decision to send the squad to the World Cup.
