Varanasi: PM Modi adopts a village and supports a Gandhian institute that faces destruction

The Varanasi chapter of the Wardha-based Sarva Sewa Sangh claimed last month that the institute was situated on 14 acres of railway land. On June 27, the railroads then posted notifications of impending destruction on the institute's buildings.
The institution unsuccessfully requested a meeting with Modi during his July 7-8 visit to Varanasi, claiming it had paperwork demonstrating the property had been purchased from the railroads in 1960 thanks to Vinoba Bhave and with the president at the time's assent.
Before it hears the Sangh's plea on July 10, the Supreme Court has ordered the government to refrain from taking any action.
"We held a dharna on Saturday in Nagepur, which Modi had adopted to develop it as a model village after he won from Varanasi in 2014," Kumar said to reporters.
"Modi undoubtedly made some progress in this area; he fixed the roads, constructed a community center, and established a few self-help organizations. But as Nagepur locals who adhere to Gandhi's philosophy, we find the manner he is attacking the Sangh intolerable.
He said that the peasants frequented the Sangh.
"Initially, the government wanted to take the three buildings of the Gandhi Vidya Sansthan, which Jayaprakash Narayan had established on the Sangh compound in the 1960s," said Sangh member Saurabh Singh, who talked with The Telegraph by phone from Varanasi.
However, the state administration became vengeful while we were filing our case with the Allahabad High Court and claimed that the Sangh land belonged to the railroads, who had made the decision to demolish all 10 houses there.
The Sangh had requested relief from the high court, which had been rejected, so it went to the supreme court.
