To settle at 81.82 against the US dollar, the rupee increases 13 paise.
On Monday, the Indian rupee strengthened 13 paise versus the US dollar as the country's foreign exchange reserves saw a significant increase. When compared to the previous closing of 81.95, the local currency closed the day at 81.82 per dollar.
The Reserve Bank of India said on Friday that for the week ending July 14, India's foreign exchange reserves increased by $12.743 billion to $609.022 billion.
In the previous reporting week, the total reserves had decreased by $2.901 billion to $593.198 billion.
The dollar index, which measures the value of the dollar relative to a basket of six different currencies, increased 0.19% to 101.26.
Anuj Choudhary, a research analyst at Sharekhan by BNP Paribas, stated that "the Indian rupee gained on softening crude oil prices and a sharp jump in India's forex reserves."
Sharp gains were nonetheless limited by a sluggish tone in the home markets and a strong US dollar. Despite poor PMI data from Europe and the UK that showed activity shrinking even further, the US dollar increased, he said.
In response to worsening global risk sentiment, which may strengthen the safe-haven US dollar and put pressure on riskier currencies, "we expect the rupee to trade with a slight negative bias," Choudhary added.
He said that the rupee may also be affected by risk aversion in foreign markets and growing worries about a global economic downturn.
"Continuous foreign inflows, though, might help the currency at lower levels. Prior to the FOMC meeting later this week, investors could continue to be cautious. In the near future, we anticipate the USD/INR spot to trade between 81.50 and 82.40.
