To pay off its energy debt, Bangladesh will contribute $960 million in monthly instalments.
In order to pay off its debts to LNG suppliers, international oil corporations (IOCs), and local and foreign power plant owners, Bangladesh has declared that it will start paying $960 million every month in July. Following a direction from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the choice was chosen. The Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources' (MPEMR) power division will receive $160 million of the total amount paid each week to settle debt with power plant owners, and the Energy and Mineral Resources Division (EMRD) will receive $80 million for payments to LNG suppliers and IOCs.
State-run Petrobangla Chairman Zanendra Nath Sarker underlined the importance of paying off debt to LNG suppliers and IOCs in order to secure ongoing natural gas supplies. For the fiscal year 2023–2024, the MPEMR's Power Division has also asked almost $5.921 billion to guarantee a constant supply of power.
Bangladesh hopes to pay off its energy debt with the help of international lenders despite its financial difficulties in order to prevent interruptions before the next general election in January 2024. An approximate $500 million loan from the Islamic Trade Finance Corporation is being discussed by Petrobangla. The government owes private independent power producers almost $2.4 billion as of June, as well as $475 million for energy imported from India, $350 million to gas businesses, and $320 million to LNG providers.
Bangladesh is working to entice international investors in addition to clearing unpaid bills. The nation's first-ever production sharing deal that is tied to Brent crude was recently authorized by the cabinet committee on economic issues. The new model, which is based on a profit-sharing formula, gives investors greater output shares and permits businesses to export natural gas after satisfying local demand. The model contract's hydrocarbon pricing is based on the same benchmark used to buy LNG. Although Bangladesh's deepwater exploration operations have previously encountered obstacles, the government is nevertheless determined to growing the country's energy industry.
